Do I need a licensed gas fitter to connect my cooktop or stove?
Yes, absolutely. In Victoria, connecting any gas appliance, including a cooktop, oven, or stove, is restricted by law to a licensed gas fitter. This isn’t a guideline, it’s a legal requirement. What is a compliance certificate and do I need one?
A compliance certificate is a legal document issued by the licensed gas fitter confirming that the gas work they completed meets Victorian safety regulations. It must be issued within five business days of the work being completed.
You need one for: any Type A gas appliance installation, relocation, or replacement (this covers cooktops, ovens, heaters, and hot water systems), and any gas work where the total job value exceeds $750 including labour, materials, and GST.
The certificate activates six years of insurance coverage on the work and keeps your appliance manufacturer warranty intact. If a gas fitter doesn’t offer one, or leaves it out of a quote to lower the price, do not proceed with them.
How do I know if I have a gas leak?
The most obvious sign is a smell of sulphur or rotten eggs near an appliance, meter, or pipe. Other signs include a hissing sound from a gas line, unexplained increases in your gas bill, appliances taking significantly longer to heat up, or dead vegetation in a straight line across your garden above buried pipework.

How often should gas appliances be serviced?

Since February 2026, gas fitters servicing Type A appliances in Victoria are required to complete the AS 4575 checklist and provide you a copy of the servicing record. If you haven’t had your appliances looked at in a few years, it’s worth booking an inspection.
Can you fix gas work done by another tradesperson?
Yes. You’re not locked in to whoever originally did the work. Any licensed gas fitter can pick up where another left off, inspect existing work, carry out repairs, or take over ongoing servicing. You don’t need to use the original installer.
